In 2009, Cai Yingzhao, with a dream of entrepreneurship, came to the Tianjin Binhai New Area (TBNA for short) with her years of technical experience and talent support in Silicon Valley, and set up Amp’ed RF Technology, which opened her career in innovation and entrepreneurship. Ten years later, in the Tianjin Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in 2019, Amp’ed RF won the first prize of the growth group in the field of electronic information, and became a model for innovation and entrepreneurship of S&T enterprises in Tianjin.
Cai Yingzhao and the company she founded was a microcosm of a decade of innovation in the TBNA. For many people engaged in technological innovation there, ten years ago was the starting point of all innovation stories, and ten years later was the beginning of new stories. On this path, everyone is a participant in innovation and a beneficiary of innovation.
Ten years of data confirm ten years of growth.
According to relevant statistics, in 2010, the TBNA had more than 5,000 technology-based SMEs. Since then, the total number of high-tech SMEs in high-tech fields such as electronic information, new energy and new materials, biomedicine, and high-tech service industries has occupied an absolute advantage. In 2019, the TBNA newly identified 396 national high-tech enterprises, reaching a total of 2,600, a year-on-year increase of 18%; the newly identified national technology-based SMEs were 2,049, an increase of 10.6%; the number also surpassed 33,000 ahead of schedule.
The China Regional Science and Technology Innovation Evaluation Report 2019 compiled by the China Academy of Science and Technology Development Strategy shows that Tianjin's comprehensive science and technology innovation level index has reached 81.17%. After Shanghai and Beijing, it has ranked the third in the country for 17 consecutive years. As a "bridgehead" for scientific and technological innovation in Tianjin, Binhai New Area has always played an innovation-driven role, playing its own role in the fields of technological innovation environment creation, high-tech industrialization, scientific and technological activity output, scientific and technological activity input, and scientific and technological economic and social development.
Enterprises are the "main force" to play the role of innovation.
In the Tianjin Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in 2019, Tianjin Dewater Bioelectronics Technology Co., Ltd. from the TBNA won the first prize in the start-up group in the field of biomedicine, and also won the Outstanding Enterprise Award issued by the 8th China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. This technology-based enterprise, which has been established for more than a year, has grown rapidly, relying on the "big tree of innovation" of Tianjin International Joint Academy of Biomedicine (TJAB for short). According to the person in charge of the company, it has developed and put into production a series of clinical mass spectrometry sample pretreatment equipment and supporting consumables, and has undertaken 5 commissioned developments with a contract value of more than 3 million yuan. At the same time, relying on its own technical advantages, it has applied for 6 invention patents and 1 utility model patent.
Although the start-up enterprises are developing rapidly, at the same time, senior companies that have settled in TBNA for more than ten years or even more than twenty years are also advancing with the times and are "saddling" along the road of technological innovation.
In 1998, Dr. Hong Hao founded Asymchem Company in the TBNA. After more than 20 years of development, the company has become the world's leading provider of CDMO (customized R & D and production of pharmaceutical contracts) solution providers. In November 2016, it successfully listed on the Shenzhen SME Board and became one of 51 listed company in Tianjin. As of now, the total market value exceeds 27 billion yuan, and it has more than 10 subsidiaries worldwide. In 2017, this company was selected as the "Binhai New Area Leading Technology Leader".
"As the first batch of leading technology companies in the TBNA, the company always adheres to green technology as its core driving force and is committed to independent research and development." At October 2019, the Asymchem Pharmaceutical Group held a conference on the promotion of innovative enterprise leadership programs. Huang Zhongping, senior vice president of Asymchem Company, once said that it has established innovation platforms such as "Nationally Recognized Enterprise Technology Center" and "National and Local Joint Laboratory for Green Pharmaceutical Technology". The company invests 7% to 8% of its revenue in research and development every year, and has mastered independent intellectual property rights, especially in the field of continuous reaction technology and biotransformation technology, and is in an international leading position. It has applied for more than 200 international and domestic invention patents, and the relevant patented technologies have been widely used in commercial production projects of major pharmaceutical companies, involving anti-tumor, anti-virus, anti-infection and other innovative drug treatment areas.
According to the relevant person in charge of the District Science and Technology Bureau, since last year, the TBNA has comprehensively implemented the innovation-driven development strategy, implemented an entrepreneurship-innovation carrier tackling action plan, formulated and implemented an implementation plan for the innovative enterprise leader plan, accurately targeted technology-based enterprises, and planted technology-based enterprises to grow up. It has formed a young eagle-gazelle-national high-tech companies-level cultivation situation to make the development of high-tech enterprises in TBNA on the "fast track".
Outstanding performance of various innovation platforms
Last year, both Tianjin International Joint Academy of Biomedicine (TJAB for short) and the National Center for Supercomputing in Tianjin both spent their tenth year in Binhai New Area.
Ten years ago, a 70,000-square-meter building stood up beside Dongting Road in the Tianjin Economic-technological Development Area (TEDA for short). The TAJB, which was co-constructed with Tianjin by the Ministry of Science and Technology, has since become the “incubation base” for the biomedical industry in the TBNA. Ten years later, its technology support platform covering early discovery, preclinical research, clinical trials, and pilot production of drug development has provided more than 200,000 professional technical services to more than 800 institutions at home and abroad. Recently, it has been recognized by Tianjin Technology Transfer Demonstration Agency as a benchmark for technology transfer units in Tianjin.
In 2009, the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, the first national supercomputing center established and deployed in the TBNA, met the world for the first time. In 2019, the "Tianhe-1" deployed in the center achieved full capacity operation, fully serving the country's scientific and technological innovation and industrial development. At present, Tianhe-1 has more than 1,400 calculation tasks per day, and completes more than 3.4 million items each year. It plays an important role in all major cutting-edge technology and industrial fields. In the first half of 2019 alone, the contract revenue of technology service by the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin reached 41 million yuan, making it the only profitable supercomputing center in China. The "Key Technology and Application of Tianhe Advanced Manufacturing R & D Information Convergence Platform" developed by the Center also won the first prize of Tianjin Science and Technology Progress in April 2019.
Bai Yu, deputy director of the Science and Technology Bureau of the TBNA, said that in recent years, the technology system of the Binhai New Area has been committed to the construction of new R & D institutions and the cultivation of innovation systems. At present, the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin has completed the development of 10 billion supercomputer prototypes and is promoting the deployment of 10 billion supercomputers. The TJAB also successively hatched domestic first-class biomedical companies such as Cansino and Sinomed. In addition, the TBNA has also established a series of new research and development institutions in cooperation with well-known universities and research institutes such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which have successively hatched more than 100 high-tech companies including Sino Essence, IriStar Technology, and iKingtec.
Based on the present and look to the future. In the past ten years of development, Binhai New Area has gradually taken a road of technological innovation with “Binhai characteristics”. Facing the future, along with the implementation of the Binhai New Area Leading Plan for Innovative Enterprise Implementation Plan and the further increase in investment in scientific and technological innovation, the TBNA will continue to stimulate momentum in the field of scientific and technological innovation and move forward quickly.
